Have you ever been to historical museums?

Yes, the Cham sculpture museum in Da Nang, last year.

Actually, I'd lived in the city for three years before I finally went, which I'm not exactly proud of.

The sandstone statues date back centuries, and some are so worn that you can barely make out the faces.

Anyway, I stayed far longer than I'd planned.

Do you like history?

I do, especially the everyday side of it.

Honestly, kings and battles are interesting enough.

But I'm more curious about what ordinary people ate, or how they stayed cool before air conditioning.

I suppose small details like that give you a feel for how people really lived.

When was the last time you read about history?

Just last week, actually.

A Facebook page I follow posted old photos of Da Nang.

Believe it or not, the area around my flat was mostly sand dunes and fishing boats back then.

I spent half an hour reading the comments, where older locals were reminiscing about their childhoods.

Did you like history when you were young?

Well, yes and no.

I loved the old legends, but the textbook was as dry as dust.

We had to learn dates and names by rote, and I once mixed up two dynasties in a test.

So I guess it only really clicked when I was older.
