Do you think being polite is very important?
Yes, I'd say it's really important.
A little politeness goes a long way, especially at work.
Saying thanks or holding the door open costs nothing, but people remember it.
I mean, nobody enjoys working with someone who snaps at everyone whenever a bug appears.
How did you learn to be polite as a child?
Well, mostly from my dad.
He was quite strict about manners, so he drummed it into me that you greet every adult who comes to the house.
Before meals, I also had to invite everyone older to start eating first.
It all seemed a bit over the top back then, but I suppose it worked.
Are people in your country polite?
Oh, by and large, yes.
People are really warm with guests.
And the way we address each other depends on age, so respect for elders is sort of built into the language.
That said, once people get on a motorbike, all bets are off.
They'll honk and cut in front of you without thinking twice.
Is politeness more important now than in the past?
I reckon it matters even more now.
My parents' generation were sticklers for formal rules, like how you greet a teacher.
These days we mostly text, and a message with no please or thank you can easily come across as rude.
And, you know, people are ruder when nobody can see their face.
What do you do when someone is rude to you?
Well, that depends on the person.
If it's a stranger in a shop, I just bite my tongue, because they're probably having a bad day.
A colleague is different.
I'd have a quiet word with them later, once we've both cooled down.
Honestly, it takes a lot to wind me up anyway.
